‘That is Grief’ is a photographic collage using text scattered across a digital image of a coastal sunset sky, from a poem written in response to a live performance piece (Sound Grief Project by Lua Bairstow) created in 2022.
The work explores and riffs on a personal experience of grief, conjuring metaphors for emotional states, finding mutual ground but also continuing a performance score and artistic conversation, in creating work ‘after’ a live performance event. It questions how artistic work, both written and visual can be made using the accepted system within poetry of creating a new poem that acknowledges influence and continues a line of inquiry ‘after’ a poem that has come before, authored by somebody else.
