British Asian Musicians (2008-09) is a body of work that explores both emerging and established musical talent of those from a South Asian diaspora. From rock to dance, bhangra to house, this body of work aims to showcase the variety of music made from the UK.
Between 2007-08 Boora worked in specialist music at national radio station BBC Asian Network. The rich diversity of artists Boora heard on a daily basis inspired her to document this unique tapestry of talent in the UK, who were largely ignored or marginalised in the mainstream arts world. Indeed it was when Boora saw the magnificent 'Devotional' exhibition by Sonia Boyce, that celebrated black female singers, at the National Portait Gallery in 2007 that spurred her on to document the South Asian diaspora she identified with herself.
Funded by the Arts Council England, the musicians produced collaorative portraits with Boora bu selecting the locations that held meaning to them. The work was exhibited at The Drum Birmingham, New Arts Exchange Nottingham and printed in the V&A publication 'British Asian Style'.
