Reflections 2018

Welcome to "Reflections 2018," my online photo journal for sharing thoughts, "sketches," and works in progress. The images may be from a photography workshop, new ideas I am exploring, creative inspirations from books, movies, museums, music... or they may simply be captures of an extraordinary subject or moment that caught my eye in the course of the day. All part of my creative process, as it is for most artists and photographers. I invite you to share your thoughts about these posts via my Contact Form.

Volume 4:  Offshore Outlook

May 2018

“I spent uncounted hours sitting at the bow looking at the water and the sky, studying each wave, different from the last, seeing how it caught the light, the air, the wind; watching patterns, the sweep of it all, and letting it take me.
The sea.”

― Gary Paulsen, Caught by the Sea

Being out on the water presents a different perspective than the view from on shore. The on board floating sensation lulls you into a meditative state attuned with the rhythm of the waves or the wake from a passing vessel. That is the framework for the images I'm sharing here.

In the Wake

The boat's wake in the silvery early morning light was a study in mutating textures and patterns.

Water Under the Bridge

Crossing under a bridge presents a unique perspective of it's structure...here the support beams lit by the reflected light.

I love the way the sunlight sparkles on the water and how the large posts break up the reflections, rendering the highlights as simple line drawings in the foreground.

The posts act like frames around individual photos, each with ghost images of shrubs and fallen trees way back on the shoreline.

Pillars in the Wake

The ripples from the wake gradually morphed the reflections of these weathered pillars into abstraction.

Thank you...
