Two Day Street Photography Workshop

Brisbane, Melbourne and Sydney

Who is this workshop for?

This workshop is for street photographers who already have some experience. We'll help you refine your approach to shooting on the street and focus on the development of your street photography vision.

Day One: Shoot

We start the workshop with introductions and a conversation about why we shoot street, and about your goals for your street photography. In this session we will also review a portfolio of your work and discuss the development of your street photography vision.

The session includes a presentation and discussion about what good (and bad!) street photography is. We discuss various styles and approaches, and consider why we are each drawn to particular kinds of images and ways of working. We use our own images and the work of other photographers to provide context and inspiration and to get you thinking about your goals and what you want to get out of the workshop.

After a quick technical check-in we head out to make photographs. We'll be shooting alongside you, offering tips and suggestions. You'll also get to see how each of us approaches working on the street.

After lunch you'll be working on assignments or practicing techniques and approaches that are linked to the goals we identified earlier in the day. Those assignments are designed to increase your confidence and help you better pre-visualise and make more interesting photographs.

We finish shooting just before sunset and do a quick review of the day before we relax over coffee or a drink and talk more street!

Day Two: Sequence and Edit

The focus of the first part of day two is on editing and sequencing images.

Working with a selection of up to 25 of your own prints* (or with a set of images we provide) we'll be helping you explore how they can best fit together as a series or a sequence, so that they tell a deeper story about the places, the times and the events that you have witnessed. This exercise reveals something about your strengths, your vision and your creative response to the world around you.

After a couple more hours out shooting and a short break for lunch, we'll return to our base and take you through an effective editing and selection workflow, before you work on editing your images from the weekend for review before the end of the day.

Our classroom venue is a comfortable space near the centre of town. You'll need a laptop with Lightroom (or your preferred photo management and editing software) already installed.

*For the sequencing session we prefer to work with small prints. We'll provide more information about the session after you register.

Essentials

Meeting place and shooting locations

Our shooting locations are chosen for the opportunities they provide for street photography. We take into account easy access by public transport, seasonal factors (weather and light) and whatever events might be happening on the day.

We'll confirm our meeting and shooting location(s) a week or two before the workshop date.

What you'll need to bring

  • A digital camera that you already know how to use
  • A wide-angle lens (or a zoom that has a wide angle setting)
  • A laptop with Lightroom (or your preferred photo management and editing software)  already installed - day two only.
  • Plenty of space on one or two memory cards and a few fully charged batteries.
  • Comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, water bottle.
  • A selection of up to 25 6x4" or 5x7" prints of your own work to use during the sequencing session. Alternatively we can provide you with a set of images to sequence. Either way, you'll get a solid understanding of the principles that underpin the sequencing process!

The workshop fee covers tuition, guidance and feedback during the workshop. All other costs (transport, food and drinks) are your responsibility.
