Biography

After being selected out of over 15,000 entrants and a gruelling boot camp elimination process, Fanafikile Lephakha has been granted the opportunity to join South African explorer Riaan Manser as he rows across the Atlantic Ocean.

According to his bio: "Riaan Manser rose to prominence on becoming the first person to cycle around the perimeter of Africa. For over twenty-four months, alone & unaided, he pedalled a staggering 37,000 km through 34 countries, some of which rank as the most dangerous countries on Earth."

He was also the first person to circumnavigate Madagascar by kayak - alone and unaided.

Fanafikile Lephakha

What makes Fana's story so special is that he has never had any experience with rowing or watersports. During his interview with Damon, he spoke of how he randomly plucked up the courage to enter The Odyssey Row competition after his wife showed him an advert. Fana came from humble beginnings. IOL reports that he grew up in a shack with his mother and a sibling in Phuthaditjhaba, Free State.

The row, which will begin in the Canary Islands and then end on the Island of Barbados, will take place in the first week of December and will take about 45 days to complete. Fana will have to go through a rigorous training regime before he embarks with Riaan. His story is an inspiring one and will show you that anything is possible - you just need to put your mind to it.

MY/ TUHURA Motor Yacht Project 2018 LENGTH — 115.00m

Named after the Maori word for ‘discovery’, Tuhura is a substantial concept design with a radically different approach to hull design. Commissioned by Oceanco, the 115m proposal resembles a colossal canoe, with curvaceous light coloured hull paired with a dark gloss superstructure and a wraparound single-level deck. The canoe-style design approach was allegedly inspired by traditional Maori vessels, and the entire boat pays homage to that culture’s long, long history of ocean exploration. The exterior was created by superyacht specialists Lobanov Design, while Achille Salvagni Designs have overseen the proposed interior. Throughout the generous open-plan spaces Salvagni has used natural materials like tatami and teak floors, pairing them with bronze and gunmetal to create a warm, decidedly unsynthetic look. www.lobanovdesign.com / www.achillesalvagni.com / www.oceancoyacht.com

RUNABOUT PEDAL BOAT

NAVY WITH MAHOGANY DECK $ 25,000.00

Inspired by mid-20th Century wooden crafts, this pedal boat from Beau Lake adds a luxurious look and feel to a historically dull market. The self-draining boat's molded fiberglass tunnel hull's design was created with help from a designer of America's Cup boats, with an inlaid veneer deck and a stainless steel driveshaft that quietly transfers pedal energy into propeller movement. A huge upgrade from the injection-molded plastic pedal boats we're all used to seeing, Beau Lake's boat is finished with one-inch thick leather seat covers and a compartmentalized cooler that contours to the boat.

Photographed by CHRIS  GORDANEER

Beau Lake’s revolutionary Runabout combines the beauty and mystique of classic wooden boat aesthetics for today’s eco-conscious audience. The self-draining pedal boat consists of three primary construction components, including the hull, cockpit liner and deck surface, while an ergonomically designed, hand-carved wooden tiller with joystick component steers its course. Built for excursions, sunset cruises and lake explorations, the Runabout’s molded fiberglass body, inlaid veneer deck and beautifully finished stainless steel castings and hardware invoke the essence of a Beau Lake state of mind. Added luxury includes one-inch thick leather seat covers that snap off for easy storage and a compartmentalized cooler that contours to the boat.
