One of Texas’ Painted Churches

This is one of two churches in central Texas with the same name: the other is in Shiner. Dubina, known as the “Mother of Czechs in Texas,” was settled in 1856 by Czech immigrants. The first church, built in 1877, was destroyed by a hurricane in 1909. The rebuilt church, the one you see today, was completed in 1912. The iron cross at the top of the tower was recovered from the ruins of the first church, and is said to have been created by a Black freedman named Tom Lee.

In 1952 the original lavish interior, thought to be distracting by the Dioceses, was painted over in white. In an effort led by resident and Fayette County Judge Ed Janecka, the interior was repainted in 1983 to be as close as possible to the original, using original stencils and designs where they were available; and adding some new details.
