It Starts With Silence
A deeply personal but politically relevant photobook.
Available here for purchase.
It Starts With Silence is the first published book by Richard Ian Gosnold.
Addressing subject matter, which manyconsider taboo, it centres on the illegality of abortion and how that lawaffected him as a man, a husband and a father.
It is a poignant story, in which theartist meditates on place: physical, political and psychological.
The overarching theme in the book is Gosnold’s struggle to see beauty in the world, whilst knowing that he is powerless to help his wife and fatally ill daughter.
Gosnold comments, "I needed to speak about state sanctioned violence, forced birth, baby loss and lack of access to compassionate healthcare. This book, born out of anger, is made as a tender protest, in the spirit with which I would have discussed sensitive topics with our daughter, had she not been doomed to die."
It Starts With Silence was shortlisted for the Unseen Dummy Award in 2019.
