For the latest edition of our contest series Format Picks, we partnered up with print service Newspaper Club, asking artists to submit work around the theme “print’s not dead.” We received lots of incredible print-based and print-inspired submissions. Photographer Josh Nice’s work stood out as a perfect example of a creator keeping print alive: he submitted a self-published zine featuring analog photography.
Nice is a film-focused photographer who’s printed and self-published a number of zines, often depicting his friends and community in black and white images. His zines are currently available for purchase at his online store.
Format Picks is an ongoing project in which we ask artists to submit work around different themes for a chance to win a prize and publication in the magazine. Entry is always free and open to anyone. Last month, our winners were Iggy Smalls and Chris Penso, who each received a $250 grant for their travel photography.
Nice has won a $500 voucher to print whatever he likes through Newspaper Club. Below, find his winning GIF, and some background from the photographer on his submission.

“My work interprets the theme of ‘print’s not dead’ very strongly because I ALWAYS turn my work into print. I love the tangibility of my work and love holding it in my hands.
“I shoot all of my photos on film, and when I shoot a body of work I print the photos in my darkroom and then turn my photos into a project to then turn into either a zine/print project or a book. I love making zines and turning my work into something physical.
“This is my latest print project which features photographs from various skate trips around Europe spanning over the last 3 years. All shot on film, all hand developed/scanned, all hand-printed, all self-published.” — Josh Nice
