The Art MetroCards We Wish Existed

We asked illustrator Pranavi Suthagar to imagine NYC MetroCards by Yayoi Kusama, Cindy Sherman, Anish Kapoor and more.

Last week, NYC’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority released subway cards featuring the work of artist Barbara Kruger and it got us thinking—what other artists would we love to see on MetroCards? What would it look like if Anish Kapoor, Yayoi Kusama or Awol Erizku became part of your daily commute?

We asked illustrator Pranavi Suthagar to create some speculative designs for new artist MetroCards, and we think M.T.A. should consider making these into a reality. There’s cards for Cindy Sherman, Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, Shahzia Sikander, Anish Kapoor, Awol Erizku, and Jenny Holzer.

Previous limited-edition MetroCards include designs for Supreme (which wreaked serious havoc at stations) and 2015’s NBA All-Star Game. However, Kruger might be the last collaboration because M.T.A. recently announced that NYC is going to replace MetroCards entirely, in favor of London Underground-style electronic readers. Going digital might solve the problem of turnstile pile-ups and long lines at card-dispensing machines, but you have to admit that there’s something special about that flimsy, finicky little card.

Check out Suthagar’s artist MetroCard designs below and find more of her work at pranavi.format.com, built using Format.
