Artist Rob Pruitt Designed Shirts for…J. Crew?

The iconic, poppy artist has teamed up with the preppy fashion store to create athletic gear.

Here’s an unexpected collab: post-conceptual artist Rob Pruitt has designed a shirt for retailer J. Crew. That’s right, the artist known for pop art pandas and the scandalous 1998 installation “Cocaine Buffet” (a 16-foot mirror decorated with a line of real cocaine for gallery-goers) has teamed up with one of America’s preppiest stores.

Available online only, the Rob Pruitt™ for J. Crew Rash Guard retails for $125.00, in pink, orange, and rainbow hues. What is a rash guard, you might ask? It’s a shirt surfers and other water sport lovers tend to don in order to avoid sunburn. Sales benefit The Skin Cancer Foundation.

Speaking to J. Crew, Pruitt says, “Seeing my art on a rash guard is like seeing my art on a human body as opposed to a canvas. I like how it changes from person to person.” He also shared that, if he weren’t an artist, he’d consider a career in oceanography—maybe that explains this new foray into surf wear.
