Biography

Omar Estrada (Cuba)

Omar Estrada is a Cuban curator, educator, and interdisciplinary artist based in Toronto. Omar holds a bachelor of arts with a major in painting and drawing education from the National School of Art in Havana (1983), a bachelor of fine arts in printmaking from the University of Arts in Havana (1995), and a master of fine arts from the University of Arts in Havana (2002). Omar is the co-founder of Unpack Studio, a Toronto-based independent platform for artist research and residency collaboration in Cuba. Omar has been on the Board of members of the Latin American Canadian Art Projects in Toronto for over ten years.

Omar Estrada’s studio work is an interdisciplinary practice through installation, sound, video, interactivity, and narrative text to explore the tensions between art and science in the context of questioning social structures and knowledge. His work has been showcased in the solo exhibition Consensus Data Breakthrough (2018) at the Clayton Staples Gallery, McKnight Art Center in Wichita, Kansas, and included in the collective exhibitions From the Heroic to the Absurd (2016), curated by Tamara Toledo, Sur Gallery, Toronto, and the 2015 Havana Biennial in Cuba.
