Biography 

María Ezcurra (born 1973, Buenos Aires, Argentina) 

María Ezcurra was born in Argentina, raised in Mexico, and is based in Montreal. She is a visual artist and educator and holds a diploma in visual arts from the Facultad de Artes de Diseño de la Universidad Autonoma de Mexico (1992), a master of fine arts in mixed media from the Chelsea College of Art in London (1998), and a master of fine arts from the San Francisco Art Institute funded by the Fulbright-Garcia Robles Scholarship (1999). In 2016, she completed a PhD from the Department of Art Education at Concordia University in Montreal, Quebec. María has more than 20 years of experience as an educator and has taught in multiple organizations, at the Universidad Autonoma del Estado de Morelos in Mexico, Concordia University in Montreal, and as an art mediator as part of the P. Lantz Initiative for Excellence in Education and the Arts at McGill University in Montreal. She has been the recipient of multiple grants and awards including the 2019 Prix de la Diversité en Arts Visuels by the Conseil des arts de Montréal and the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Société et culture in 2013. 

María Ezcurra’s studio work is textile based. She creates sculptures, installations, and performances that engage in spatial experiences to reflect on feminized, gender-social relations and their relationship with the land. María has showcased in the solo exhibitions (Dé)Masquer (2022) at Dare-Dare artist-run centre in Montreal, Migrantes Neotropicales y Otros (2021) at Oboro Gallery, and Tension (2020) at La Centrale Powerhouse in Montreal. Her work has been part of the collective exhibitions Gossamer (2019), curated by Zoe Bedeaux, at Carl Freedman Gallery in the UK, Made in China, curated by Dominique Fontaine (2014), at Nuit Blanche in Toronto, and Parasites (2012) at Eaton Centre in Montreal.
