Biography 

Alexandra Gelis Lombana (born 1975, Colombian-Venezuelan) 

Alexandra Gelis is a Colombian-Venezuelan interdisciplinary visual artist based between Toronto, Panama, and Colombia. Alexandra’s academic journey began in 1991 when she studied photography with Esteban Eljaiek and Abdu Eljaiek in Bogota, Colombia. In 1998 Gelis completed a bachelor of fine arts from the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano in Bogota. In 2011, Alexandra completed a master of fine arts from York University. She is a PhD candidate in environmental studies at York University in Toronto. In 2020 she was awarded the Grace and David Taylor Graduate Scholarship in Caribbean Studies. 

Alexandra Gelis’s studio work is in new media technology, installation, photography, and video. Her practice is based on ecological research to address social displacement and environmental politics in Latin America, including the Caribbean. Alexandra’s work has been extensively showcased in North America, Latin America, Africa, and Europe. She has showcased in the screenings Entradas y Salidas (2021), Festival de Cine Corto de Popayán, Colombia, Traces (2020), curated by Jorge Lozano, Vancouver Latin American Film Festival, and at the London Ontario Media Arts Association (2018). Her work has also been part of the collective exhibitions With-Living: Migrant Relations (2022), curated by Claudia Arana, at the Cloverdale Mall, Etobicoke, and Queer Art Festival: Evolution (2019), curated by Elwood Jimmy, Vancouver.
