Biography 

Romeo Góngora (Guatemala) 

Romeo Góngora is a Guatemalan scholar and interdisciplinary artist based in Montréal, Quebec. Romeo holds a bachelor of arts (1998), a master in art in media art (2005) from the Université du Québec à Montréal, and is a PhD fellow in the Art Department at Goldsmiths University of London in the United Kingdom. He is co-founder of the collective Intervals, led by artists and cultural professionals to foster research and produce artistic projects in Montreal. Romeo’s process involves research in which he collaborates closely with different communities. He participated in the residency Despina Organization (2016) in Rio de Janeiro, and the project Place des Arts? (2013) at Dare-Dare organization in Montreal, where he carried out collaborative work employing performative elements and radical pedagogy to promote socio-political and human awareness. 

Romeo Góngora’s studio work is research instructed. His purpose is not to create an art object but a research project that materializes in a transdisciplinary form, producing collaborative installations, performances, meetings, and writing. Romeo has showcased in the solo exhibitions The Future Behind Us (2017) curated by Lily Hall, Truck Contemporary Art, Calgary and Just Watch Me (2014) at Leonard and Bina Ellen Art Gallery, Concordia University, Montreal. His work has been part of the collective exhibitions Art Souterrain Festival (2022) in Montreal, The Recipe Making: Latin American Art in Canada (2018), co-curated by Analays Alvarez Hernandez and Daymi Coll Padilla, Sur Gallery, Toronto, and Preto Velho, Laura Mars Gallery, Berlin.
