Biography
Jorge Lozano (Colombia)
Jorge Lozano is a Colombian multimedia artist based in Toronto. Jorge taught himself filmmaking after he immigrated to Canada in 1970. His first film was a black-and-white Super 8. Jorge continued exploring time-based media and created more than 150 films, including video installations. In 2010 Jorge completed a master’s degree in fine arts from York University in Toronto. Jorge has been the recipient of many awards including the Governor General’s Award in Visual and Media Arts in 2020. He has been part of community initiatives such as the aluCine film festival, which is dedicated to showcasing Latin American filmmakers based in Canada, and has participated in (and been a spokesperson for) the Toronto Latin Media Festival. Jorge’s community engagement has grown to make liaisons between Canada and Colombia through youth film workshops.
Jorge Lozano’s studio work explores time-based media and sounds to portray different subjects about body, land, immigration, and the philosophy of belonging in its multiple stages. Jorge’s films have been part of numerous film festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, the Sundance Festival, and the Toronto Latin Media Festival. His work has been showcased in solo exhibitions including Moving Still_ still, life (2015) at the Image Centre Gallery, Toronto Metropolitan University, and honoured by the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival (2020). His work has also been part of group exhibitions including Configurations, a duo exhibition with English filmmaker Mike Hoolboom at A Space Gallery in 2019.
