Biography
Manolo Lugo (Monterrey, Mexico)
Manolo Lugo is a Mexican visual artist based in Toronto. Manolo holds a master of visual studies in contemporary arts from the University of Toronto (2013). In 2007 he completed a bachelor of fine arts in visual performing arts from Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver. He also completed a bachelor’s degree in international relations and affairs from the Instituto Tecnologico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey in Mexico (1999). Manolo has worked as a digital media technician and teaching assistant at the University of Toronto in Scarborough and as a sessional faculty in the Visual Studies Department at the same university. As a freelancer, Manolo has documented performances for the exhibitions Longevity or a Lack Thereof at the MacLaren Art Centre in Barrie, Ontario (2018), for the Verb Frau TV broadcast experiment (2017), and the artist Cheryl L’Hirondelle performance Light Tipi for Nuit Blanche at Nathan Phillips Square in Toronto (2014).
Manolo Lugo’s studio work is focused on photographs, videos, and performances to reflect on politics and land conflicts. His work has been part of the collective exhibitions TransAmericas (2017) at Museum London in London, Ontario, and True Patriot Love (2015) curated by Tamara Toledo at Sur Gallery, Toronto.
