The workshop

Each of us has a story, and we share much of it with our faces and bodies.  If portraiture is the artistic telling of that story, how do we best make a genuine portrait?  A photographic portrait combines the technical and creative to celebrate the picture's subject.  In this workshop, Beowulf Sheehan and you will address and move forward on both ends of the spectrum.

In the workshop, you can look forward to

• Reviewing film and digital camera basics

• Studying lighting, indoors and environmental, and metering

• Discussing workflow:  Preproduction/research, photography, and postproduction (editing and retouching)

• Working with camera settings and lighting to achieve technical goals for your portraits

• Addressing creativity in portraiture:  Engaging your subject, seeing your subject in relation to the environment, building trust, sharing empathy

As a student, you will be asked to

• Share twenty pictures (jpg, sRGB, 2000 pixels on the short side, all on USB flash drive) with which to give the class a sense of your work

• Bring your camera, personally essential lenses, laptop, memory cards, card readers (Lighting and grip equipment will be provided.  If you wish to bring your own on-camera flash, however, you are welcome to do so.)

• Pack comfortable and warm clothing for working outside, relaxed clothing for working inside, and your toiletries for your overnight stay

* Be excited to both make photographs and be photographed

You are welcome to arrive at Naulakha between 11:30AM and 12:30PM on Sunday, October 15, to be shown your room and be given a chance to prepare your computer and camera equipment.  The workshop will begin promptly at 1:00PM Sunday.  On Sunday, we will have an introductory class session, photograph indoors and outdoors, have dinner on site, have another photography and class (review) session after dinner.  On Monday morning, we will have one more photography session after breakfast, followed by a last class session.  A complete schedule will be sent to you after enrollment.
