This Artist Paints His Own Shirt As An Homage To Famous Painters

Artist Hank Schmidt in der Beek visits locations of famous paintings, only to paint the pattern of his own shirt instead of the scenery.

Photographer Fabian Schubert and artist Hank Schmidt in der Beek create a playful, absurd take on painting en plein air with this ongoing photo series titled Und im Sommer tu ich malen (“And in summer, I paint”).

The Berlin-based duo travels to a number of stunning natural locations painted by famous artists like Monet, Van Gogh, and Ferdinand Hodler. But, rather than painting the scenery, in der Beek paints the pattern of his own shirt. Schubert’s photographs of the resulting scenes are very funny, presenting an interesting challenge for art experts who want to try identifying which painter inspired which image.

“Confronted with the immenseness of the mountains and the littleness of my canvasses, I decided to paint what’s nearest to me instead of what’s afield and giant,” in der Beek dijo of the project. It definitely helps that he seems to have a 1980s-inspired penchant for vividly patterned sweaters and stripe-y polo shirts.
