Format Picks is our monthly contest series. Launched last month, it’s an open call for creative work of all kinds, always free to enter. At the beginning of every month, we’ll announce a new theme for you to interpret.
Our first theme was the color red, and we were so overwhelmed by all the incredible work you submitted. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for us this month.
March’s contest theme
This month, the theme of Format Picks is self-portraiture.
Feel free to interpret this theme loosely. A self-portrait doesn’t have to depict what you look like. You could find a self-portrait in where you live, your favorite books, the way you make your bed. A self-portrait could illustrate how you see yourself or how you want to be seen. Maybe your self-portrait includes your family or your dog. Maybe it doesn’t include your face and maybe it does.
Whether your self-portrait is literal or abstract, we’re looking for creative work that offers a unique and memorable interpretation of the theme. We especially welcome submissions that give more background with a brief artist statement.
What to submit
You can submit a self-portrait in the form of photography, drawing, painting, sculpture, collage, GIF, digital illustration, or any other visual medium you choose. Entry is limited to one image per person. Images should preferably be a minimum of 1200 pixels wide and 72 dpi resolution. We prefer JPG or PNG files.
This month, we’ll select one Format Picks winner who will receive a $250 USD award. The winner will also be featured in a Format Magazine article highlighting their work. There will also be one Audience Choice winner chosen by votes from the community. This winner will also receive a $250 USD award and be featured in Format Magazine.
How to submit
The deadline for entries is March 31th, 11:59 pm EDT.
When saving your work for submission, please include your full name in the file name. Submitted files cannot be larger than 5MB.
Once your art is submitted, it will appear in the entry gallery here, where the community will be able to vote on their favorite entries. The entry with the most votes will win the Audience Choice prize, so be sure to check back during the month of March to cast your vote for your favorite work.
