The Best Photography of Pokémon Go

We all know Pokémon Go is addictive. But does it have artistic potential too?

It’s been out for less than two weeks, and Pokémon Go is already the most popular mobile game in US history.

In case you haven’t tried the game, this brand-new iteration of Pokémon uses augmented reality to build off real-world data to create gameplay that’s a mix of virtual and real. Pokémon Go uses your smartphone’s GPS to transport you into a world where Pokémon are roaming around your office, home, local parks, and malls, ready to be caught at any moment. Unlike the original Pokémon GameBoy games, in Pokémon Go you have to actually wander around the real world on your quest to catch ’em all.

Turns out a lot of people are really curious about what it would be like to be a Pokémon trainer IRL, and the massive popularity of the game has lead to some bizarre stories: armed robbers in Missouri used it to lure victims to an isolated spot, and a teenager in Wyoming discovered a dead body while playing. This video of a crowd of entranced players in Central Park calls the game “proof that The Matrix is coming.”

Everyone’s freaking out about Pokémon Go. But what about the game’s creative possibilities? We’ve seen lots of innovative artwork produced because of games like Grand Theft Auto. Could the same happen with Pokémon Go? The game allows players to take photos of their Pokémon conquests out in the wild, opening up the opportunity for some hilarious and strange photography.

We’ve rounded up some of our favorite shots from Pokémon Go Snap here.
